Preparing to Travel
To ensure you have the best experience possible, we have compiled a comprehensive list of things you need to know before you travel.
1. Passports
To travel to East Africa your passport needs to be valid for at least six (6) months after your journey ends, and should have a minimum of four (4) blank visa pages for entry and exit stamps.
2. Visas
To travel to Kenya you must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) via etakenya.go.ke. It is normally valid for 3 months from the date of travel.3. Vaccinations
Kenya currently has no COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements for entry.
A yellow fever vaccination is required if you are arriving from, or have transited through, a yellow fever-endemic area. For guests visiting Kenya, vaccination for yellow fever is necessary and you must carry an International Certificate of Vaccination.
You will be traveling to areas of malaria transmission. We strongly advise that you speak with your doctor regarding antimalarial drugs and mosquito bite prevention.
4. Plastic Bags Ban
The governments of Kenya and Tanzania have implemented a ban on plastic bags. The ban applies to "carrier and flat bags," including duty-free bags. Ziploc bags are also restricted. We recommend using reusable bags for your luggage organization.
5. Packing List & Baggage Restrictions
On flights within East Africa, each passenger is limited to a maximum baggage weight of 33 pounds (15 kilograms), including hand luggage.
Soft-sided luggage or duffels are preferable to hard luggage for storage on safari vehicles and small aircraft. Dimensions should not exceed 23 inches long x 13 inches high x 10 inches wide.
6. What to Carry
- Bright summer clothes for safari tour (avoid dark blue/black as they attract tsetse flies).
- Warmer clothes for evenings and early mornings.
- Comfortable walking shoes.
- Power adapter (UK type G sockets are used in East Africa).
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
- Insect repellent and personal medications.
- Binoculars and camera with extra batteries.
- Copies of personal documentation.
7. Money Matters
We recommend traveling with some cash (USD issued after 2009) and at least two different major credit cards (Visa/Mastercard).
Inform your bank about your travel plans to avoid card blocks. Local currency (Shillings) can be obtained at ATMs or forex bureaus.
8. Safety & Valuables
We strongly recommend leaving expensive jewelry at home. Use hotel safes to secure your valuables, passports, and money. Keep a photocopy of your passport separate from the original.
9. Photography
Always ask permission before taking pictures of local people. Photography of government buildings, airports, and military installations is prohibited.
